The death of Mr Thomas McDonald which occurred at his residence, Riverview, Mataura, last week removes a figure who was well known and highly respected by all sections of the community. Bom at Milton, 71 years ago, he moved with his parents to Lovell’s Flat and thence to Mataura where he received his education. Following some years of farm work in various portions of the district he subsequently purchased portion of the land which he owned at time of his death, the former holding being added to from time to time. His main interest centred on the cultivation and develop-

ment of his land and with the exception of serving for a period of 31 years as a director of the local dairy factory, he did not take an active part in district functions. The deceased had acted as judge on many occasions at district shows because of his knowledge of dairying breeds. Of a somewhat retiring disposition he earned the respect of a wide circle of friends in Eastern Southland all of whom found him to be a man of undoubted integrity. Predeceased by his wife some three years ago, the late Mr McDonald leaves a family of five sons, Arthur (Oteramika), John, Ernest, Gordon, and Victor (Mataura), while two sisters, Mrs John Richmond (Mataura) and Mrs J. Wallace (Gore) survive him and to these the sympathy of citizens of Mataura are extended in their loss. Rifle Shooting. The weekly shoot of the Mataura Defence Rifle Club was held on the range on Saturday afternoon, members firing over the 300' and 500 yards ranges. This shoot was the first of a series to count for the Parker Cup ana conditions generally were fair, a brisk but steady wind being encountered. Following are the scores:—
