NEW SHIPS

SUBSTANTIAL ORDERS GREATER ACTIVITY IN BRITAIN NAVAL CONTRACTS (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, November 2. Greater activity in shipbuilding is reported. Last month orders w'ere placed for 43 vessels, of which 32 are for British owners. Out of 275,000 tons gross 154,000 tons are for motor ships and 121,000 for steamers. It is expected that further substantial orders will be placed in the near future, for although ships of nearly 200,000 tons gross are still laid up in Britain some 1,300,000 tons of the existing mercantile fleet are over 25 years old. Naval work has brought orders to the Tyneside estimated at . over .£7,000,000 in the last month. One yard has secured contracts for two destroyers and one cruiser which will keep it occupied for more than two years and give employment to 2000 men. The yards at Sunderland have received six new contracts in six days, including one for two 4000-ton colliers and one for three 9300-ton motor ships.
