GORE BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Gore Borough Council was held last evening when his Worship the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) presided over Councillors J. A. Wright, W. K. Hamilton, J. A. Baldey, R. L. Reid, T. Sim, N. Robson, A. McLachlan, J. A. S. Aitken, G. C. Hamilton, A. H. W. Aitken and W. T. Trusler. The district engineer of the Railway Department (Mr J. Dow) wrote in reply to the council’s request that Ordsal street would be reopened on the grounds that no notice of the closing had been given by the department. He stated that he could not agree with the council’s contention and could not find anything in the Public Works Act, 1928, to sustain the council’s claim. He regretted, therefore, that the previous decision of the department could not be reversed. The letter was referred to the Works Committee, councillors expressing the opinion that the matter should not be allowed to rest. The secretary of the Local Government Loans Board advised that the applications for authority to raise loans of £3OOO for baths and £6OOO for footpaths would be investigated, after which they would be submitted to the earliest meeting of the board. Mr D. Harvey as returning officer on behalf of the Southland Electric Power Board for the vacancy on the board as representative of the boroughs of Gore, Mataura and Tapanui and Wyndham town district, caused by the death of Mr A. A. Mac Gibbon, advised that it would be necessary to appoint a member by agreement A meeting of delegates of the local bodies concerned would be held on November 22. Councillors Wright and Baldey were appointed delegates of the council. The traffic inspector (Mr J. H. Croad) reported that 38 motor drivers’ licenses and five heavy traffic licenses had been issued during the month. Twenty-one cars had been tested for brakes and lights. Three convictions had been secured. Works Committee. The Works Committee submitted the following recommendations, which were adopted:— It was decided to recommend that the work of laying concrete kerb, channel and footpath in Canning street be carried out by the council staff. It was decided to recommend that the council accept the subsidy of 12 per cent, on the total cost of baths and footpaths instead of 35/- a man per week.
