40 NEW SHIPS
CLYDESIDE ACTIVITY. WELCOME IMPROVEMENT. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, October 31. During the last three months orders for more than 40 new ships have been booked by the Clyde shipbuilding industry and tenders are out for other contracts worth more than £1,000,000. The orders secured in October alone are estimated at £4,000,000. It is calculated that by the spring of next year the Clyde shipyards will have over 400,000 tons gross of new tonnage on hand. The improvement, which calls forth memories of the brisk trade enjoyed by the Clydeside in the years after k l9lB, is most welcome in a locality which suffered severely in the earlier part of the depression.
