SHEEP WORRYING
PREVALENCE AROUND WELLINGTON.
FARMERS’ LOSSES.
(Per United Press Association.)
Wellington, November 2.
According to a station-owner sheep worrying by dogs has been very prevalent around Wellington for the past few weeks. On his place alone on Friday between 20 and 30 ewes were found killed outright, also a number of lambs. On mustering his ewes he found some to be in a shocking condition with their hindquarters and backs badly torn. A neighbour lost four stud ewes all within an hour or two.
The damage was obviously done by a big dog. A shepherd shot at and wounded an Alsatian in the act of worrying, but he had no collar or distinguishing marks. Two smaller dogs were with him.
He understood the dog that killed the stud sheep was found to be registered, but the owner was penniless and to sue was merely to add to the loss.
He says the greatest curse of all are pig dogs taken over the hills at weekends by youths with little respect for people’s property or animals.
