KEEN COMPETITION

LARGE ENTRIES EXCELLENT INDIVIDUAL PERFORMERS Entries were large, competition was exceedingly keen in all three championship grades —senior, intermediate and junior—and some brilliant performances were registered. Five records were broken throughout the day and, had not the warm calm of the morning been displaced by a cold south-westerly wind in the afternoon, this number might have been increased. As it was, two performances which bettered the existing figures were not allowed on account of the following wind. . Individual championship honours were shared by C. L. Morrison and H. W. Gowland (both of Waitaki), in the senior division, both gaining 11 points. Morrison was to the fore in the held events, while Gowland proved to be the “dark horse” in the sprinting department. He gained the decision over the much-lauded B. P. Hoffman (St. Keyins) in the hundred yards and also collected the 220 yards title. There was little to spare in either of these events, for the competition was very keen, but Gowland demonstrated that he was a sprinter of much more than avei age ability. Another good performance was that of G. McLachlan, Southland Boys’ High School, in the quarter-mile senior championship. He is a cousin of the famous middle distance runner Lachie McLachlan, of Otago and his action and race generalship very much resembles that of his relative. His judgment in the quarter was well nigh perfect, and his win was loudly applauded. McLachlan was the only Southlander to win a title. P. A. Bay (Waitaki) put up an excellent performance by. winning the senior mile championship in the record time of 4min. 54sec. A slightly built runner, Bay set himself a heavy task by electing to go into the lead from the outset and stay there. He proved the wisdom of these apparently foolhardy tactics by romping home with 20 yards to spare. L. Cornwell (5.8.H.5.), who ran second, also put up a fine performance. A powerfully built athlete, I. M. Chandler carried all before him in the field event section of the intermediate championship and won the individual honours by a margin of five points. In the high jump he broke the existing record by nearly three inches. Although still an intermediate, Chandler is the joint holder of the .senior athletic championship at the Otago Boys’ High School. The intermediate section revealed another promising performer in C. McGregor, Otago Boys’ High School. McGregor clipped three-fifths of a second off the record for the intermediate 440 yards championship, and also v’on the furlong title in the fast time of 24 3-ssec.—equal to the figures put up by Gowland in the senior championship event.

Welsh had matters all his own way in the junior division and won the title by a margin of 15 points. He carried off titles in the 100 yards, 220 yards, quarter-mile and high jump. Tall for his age, but very well built, Welsh is an outstanding young athlete and only partially revealed his ability when in the morning he won his heat of the quarter-mile in. the record time of 60 sec. In the afternoon he demonstrated that he was equally at home in sprinting and jumping as he was as a quarter miler. A feature of the afternoon was the splendid work of the officials, the lengthy programme being despatched well up to time. Especially commendable was the work of Mr G. McAnergney, who combined the onerous duties of secretary with those of announcer—and proved equally efficient in both departments. The championship shields were presented at the conclusion of the sports by his Worship the Mayor, Mr John Miller, who congratulated the competitors on the fine performances registered. In the results the following contractions have been used: Otago Boys’ High School (O.), Southland Boys’ High School (S.), Southland Technical College (S.T.C.), McGlashan College (J.McG.), Christian Brothers’ High School (Dunedin), (C. 8. Record, 10 3-ssec, R. E. Naumann (0.8.H.5.), 1932. Title-holder, D. Wilson (W.8.H.5.), 10 2-ssec. (Nine entries). First heat: B. Hoffman (St. K.) 1, W. Donaldson (S.) 2, H. W. Gowland (W.) 3. Hoffman got a clear break of two yards and went away to win by three yards. Time, 10 l-ssec. Second heat: H. E. Wilson (W.) 1, K. H. Gregory (O.) 2, P. J. McMullan (St. K.) 3. Won by two yards. A yard separated second and third. Time, 10 2-ssec. Final. Gowland 1 Hoffman 2 Donaldson 3 After two false starts Hoffman was a little behind when the pistol went and had to go hard to catch Gowland, who ran a fine race. The finish was very exciting, Hoffman appearing to just get his stride in and breast the tape ahead of Gowland. The judges, however, gave the decision to Gowland. Donaldson was about two yards further back. Time, 10 4-ssec. 220 YARDS. Record, 24 l-ssec, R. E. Naumann (0.8.H.5.) 1932. Title-holder, D. Wilson (W.8.H.5.), 23 4-ssec. (Nine entries). First heat: H. W. Gowland (W.) 1, B. P. Hoffman (St. K.j 2, E. Allison (S.) 3. Won by five yards, a yard separating second and third. Time, 24 3-ssec. Second heat: E. Boyd (S.) 1, K. Gregory (O.) 2, W. R. Hooper (W.) 3. Won by five yards, a similar distance separating second and third. Time, 24 3-ssec. Final. Gowland 1 Boyd 2 Hoffman 3 But for a bad start Boyd might well have won this event. As it was, he put in a spirited finish and there was an exciting struggle as the tape was neared, Gowland just prevailing by .inches. Hoffman was half a yard further back. Time, 24 3-ssec. 440 YARDS. Record, 54 4-ssec, C. Stevens (5.8.H.5.) 1932. Title-holder, P. G. McLauchlan (5.8.H.5.), 55 4-ssec. (Ten entries). First heat: H. Gardiner (S.) 1, W. R. Porter (O.) 2, W. R. Hooper (W.) 3. Won by one and a-half yards. Time, 57 l-ssec. Second heat: E. O. Watson (St. K.) 1, G. McLachlan (S.) 2, H. Stott (O.) 3. Won by a bare two feet. Time, 57 2-ssec. Final. McLachlan 1 Hooper 2 Stott 3 McLachlan thoroughly deserved his win. In the middle of a bunch for the first 50 yards, he gathered in his field like a champion going up the back straight and at the final 220 yards mark was lying second. The Southlander had moved into first position by the time the straight was reached, and, although Hooper challenged strongly, McLachlan was never troubled to win by a clear three yards. Only a foot separated second and third. Time, 57sec. 880 YARDS. Record, 2min 6sec, C. Stevens (5.8.H.5.) 1932. Title-holder, P. G. McLauchlan (5.8.H.5.), 2min sJsec. (Ten entries.) P. A. Bay (W.) 1 G. McLachlan (S.) 2 R. E. Chapman (O.) 3

Keeping excellent form throughout Bay ran a well-judged race to win by eight yards. McLachlan appeared to get into trouble in the initial stages of the journey and also let Bay get too far ahead in the final lap before putting in his run. He finished four yards ahead of Chapman. Time, 2min 10 l-ssec.

ONE MILE. Record, 4min 55sec, J. R. Don (0.P.H.5.), 1926. Title-holder, P. G. McLauchlan, smin 11 4-ssec. (Ten entries.) P. A. Bay (W.) 1 L. Cornwell (S.) 2 R. E. Chapman (O.) 3 Running at a good, strong pace Bay reeled off the four laps with mechanical precision to win by 20 yards in the record time of 4min 54sec. The Southland Boys’ High School representative Cornwell also put up a splendid performance. Just turned 15 years of age, the manner in which he hung to Bay for the major portion of the distance stamped him as one who has the makings of a champion. If anything, he had a better action than Bay, who did not move as freely as he might. Time, 4min 54sec. MILE RELAY. Record, 3min 59 2-5 sec, Southland Boys’ High, 1930. Titleholders, Southland Boys’ High, 4min 6 3-ssec. Southland Boys’ High School 1 Waitaki Boys’ High School 2 Otago Boys’ High School 3 This event—the last on the programme—provided an admirable conclusion to the meeting, being crammed with excitement throughout. The baton changing left something to be desired, but the all-round team work of the S. representatives brought them a well-earned victory. Time, 4min 2sec. 120 YARDS HURDLES. Record, 15 4-ssec., H. W. Milner (W.8.H.5.), 1932. Title-holder, R. G. Mahoney (0.8.H.5.), 16sec (eight entries). First heat; C. T, Morrison (W.) 1, B. P. Hoffman (St. K.) 2. A close finish. Time, 17sec. Second heat: J. K. Milner (W.) 1, B. Collie (S.) 2. Won easily. Time, 17 2-ssec. Final. Hoffman 1 Morrison 2 Milner 3 A hurdler of little finesse Hoffman made the most of his pace between the jumps and the final spurt to the tape, with the result that he won by a fair margin. Morrison was about three yards further back, with Milner (a brother of the record-holder) close on his heels. Time, 16 2-ssec. HIGH JUMP. Record, sft sJin, R. W. Stewart (5.8.H.5.) and T. J. McGregor 1 Baker 2 Tartakover 3 The Southland Boys’ High representative, Baker, went into the lead from the pistol and, running strongly, held it for the first furlong. He was, however, no match for the speedy and resourceful McGregor who, running a well-judged race, came into the lead entering on the final 220 yards and went on to win with a great burst of speed. Baker put in a fighting finish to gain a well-merited second placing. McGregor, whose time of 56 2-ssec established a new record, owed something to Baker, who in the unwitting role of pacemaker had set such a hot pace for over half the journey. 880 YARDS. Title-holder, P. A. Bay (W.8.H.5.), 2min 12 l-ssec (12 entries). J. Tartakover (W.) 1 C. H. Irvine (O.) 2 D.
