THE PERIODICALS

P. G. Wodehouse continues his “Laughing Gas,” the story of Joey Cooley, a child film star, obviously the result of Wodehouse’s adventures in Hollywood, in the September number of Pearson’s and this, of course, ensures a brisk demand. Reginald Campbell writes of elephants and tigers in Siam’s teak forests under the title “No Trams-Man-Eater Abroad” while Maurice Lane-Norcolt plays the goat with science in “This Ridiculous Old World”—an amusing sketch. The series “How Much Do You Know?” and “Mack’s Puzzle Page” are still brightly diverting. The fiction ration is liberal and varied.

There are nine items in the West magazine for mid-September and one of the most interesting portions is that dealing with Pancho Villa, the bandit patriot of Mexico, who was finally murdered on a farm given him by the Government. “I Kill a Grizzly” by W. A. Allen, is an exciting description of an old day battle. The fiction starts with the long story “Price of Greed” and the best includes “Wild and Woolly Willie” by S. Omar Barker, a humorous rodeo yarn, “Never Let Him Run” by Warrell Gregory, another long story of the range, “Peter’s Woman” by Clyde Wantland, showing that blackmail is dangerous in the wide open spaces, and “Good Luck Sykee,” a prospector’s adventure. These magazines come through Messrs Gordon and Gotch, Ltd., Chrichtchurch.
