360th COMPETITION. Story for Cousins 11 and under: ‘What Santa Claus is Doing Now.” Prizes of 1/- to Cousins Graeme Anderson (11), 78 Don street, Dorothy Frew (11), Milton street, South Riverton, Mary Maloney (10), Makarewa, Albert Moore (9), 231 Gala street. Special Prize of 1/- to Cousin Jack Maxwell (7), Longbush. Very Highly Commended: 3 marks to Cousins Ronald Deal (10), 53 Mitchell street, Pat Henderson (11), Waikana. Highly Commended: 2 marks to Cousin Joyce Howden (10), Mataura Island. Mona Bell (11), Lumsden, Joan Waterhouse (11), Orepuki, Daphne Earl (11), Lumsden. COMMENTS. My young cousins are very promising writers, and I am glad to see that most of you pay attention to writing and punctuation. Remember, small points such as remembering to write your age and address on an entiy, are taken into consideration, and her carelessness in this respect would have prevented Cousin Mona from winning a prize. I am giving a special prize to Cousin Jack Maxwell, who printed his story very neatly. 360th COMPETITION. Poem for Cousins 12 and over: “Loyalty.” Prizes of 1/- to Cousins Patricia Summers (16), Orepuki, Isobel McKenzie (14), Dipton. Commended: 2 marks to Cousins Eugenie McKenzie (12), Tone street, Bluff, Lilian Todd (15), Toa, and Desmond Stone (14), Morton road. COMMENTS. Evidently you considered “Loyalty” a difficult subject, and so—oh,_ unenterprising young people!—decided not to enter for this competition. The prize winners wrote well and made their subject interestng. I think Cousin Eugenie should keep to rhymed verse. It is better practice and it is only by persevering that one is able to master the fundamentals of verse-craft. The ideas in Cousin Desmond’s verse were good and well expressed, but his rhythms were not smooth. Cousin Lilian’s is a thoughtful effort; but has New Zealand ever complained of “foreign government”? 361st COMPETITION. Poem for cousins 11 and under: “I Like Getting Letters.” Story for cousins 12 and over: “The Mystery of the Lost Will.” Entries close TUESDAY, November 5. 362nd COMPETITION. Poem for all cousins: “It Must Have Been Pussy.” Prose for all cousins: “A Conversation Between a Goat and a Donkey.” Entries close, TUESDAY, November 12.
