SEAMEN’S STRIKE
A LIVELY MEETING r FURTHER ACTION DEFERRED MODERATES SCORE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 10.10 p.m.) Sydney, August 19. A mass meeting of seamen in Sydney this afternoon decided to defer further action in regard to the strike until the management committee of the union meets to-morrow to prepare a report. The proceedings to-day were extremely boisterous, resulting in several fights. A section of the men wanted an extension of the strike, but the moderates gained the day when they overwhelmingly carried a motion to defer action. The climax is likely to be reached to-morrow, when Federal Executive officers meet here to adopt a policy for presentation to the compulsory conference in Melbourne on Wednesday. Four more vessels were involved in ;he strike to-day, including the Union Company’s Kakariki, which arrived from Tasmania with potatoes and fruit. Three vessels have become idle at Brisbane.
The inter-State passenger . liners Canberra and Wcstralia were tied up this morning. Twenty-eight vessels are now idle as a result of the dispute. It is stated in official circles that the State Government may take a hand in the strike by withdrawing the dole from unemployed seamen.
