IN TOWN AND OUT

NEWS OF THE DAY Wallace Electorate. Mr W. Hinchey, chairman of the Southland Electric Power Board, stated yesterday that he had been approached to contest the Wallace electorate in the interests of the Democrat Party. He would consider the invitation and would make a definite reply in a few days’ time. * Pipe Band to go to Dunedin. According to the Dunedin Star, the secretary of the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band wrote to the Otago Rugby Football Union at its last meeting stating that the members of the band were joining with the Invercargill Pipe Band in marching to the ground at Carisbrook on the occasion of the SouthlandOtago match on Saturday, August 24. It was decided to admit free to the ground members of the band in uniform. * * * * Visits of Port Wyndham. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor ship Port Wyndham, which was launched late last year, leaves London for New Zealand in November and will make a call at Bluff. This will be the vessel’s first trip to the Dominion, for she proceeded to Australia on her maiden voyage. The beauty of Australian timbers for panelling is seen to advantage on the new ship. Queensland maple and Australian silky oak have been used with excellent effect in the limited but up-to-date passenger accommodation. * * » * Sportsmanlike Southland Crowd. Southland crowds are known from the North Cape to Bluff for their enthusiasm and loyalty, but every visitor present at the Rugby game between Otago and Southland at Invercargill must have been impressed by the fair and impartial spirit shown by the large crowd (says the Dunedin Star). Naturally the Southland public wanted to see the Maroons win—a home crowd always does want to see its team win, no matter where the match is played—but that did not prevent the spectators from applauding good play most impartially. Otago’s efforts to play the bright, open game were appreciated by the crowd, and while the keenest rivalry is still extant between the two provinces it is of the friendliest nature possible.
