Pola Negri

TO WED AGAIN. Pola Negri, one of the most glamorous of all screendbm’s stars, is to marry again, according to an admission she made recently when interviewed while on holiday at her mother’s villa at St. Jean Cap Ferrat, near Nice, on the French Riviera. She has just completed her latest Berlin film, “Mazurka.” When asked the name of her fiance, she replied: “I am afraid that is a question I am not prepared to answer at the moment. I had to choose between an American and an Englishman, and my choice has fallen on the latter.

“It is premature to disclose his identity, except that he is prominent in London society circles. We shall not be married before 12 months at least, and meanwhile I shall consider retiring from film work so as to be always near my husband. “I have three more pictures to make, the most important of which is now being negotiated with a group of British film magnates.” Pola Negri’s previous husbands were Baron Popper, a Polish army officer, Count Eugene Domski, and Prince Serge Mdivani, the marriages being dissolved. Pola’s real name is Apollonia Chaluprez. She abbreviated her first name to Pola, and her surname was suggested by her admiration for the Italian verses of Ida Negri.

Garbo is understood to have agreed to sign another two-picture contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer before leaving Hollywood for her European holiday. As on the contract she has just concluded, she will be paid £50,000 for each picture.
