COUNCIL MEETING COMMITTEE REPORTS At the meeting of the Gore .Borough Council last evening there were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) and Councillors W. T. Trusler, A. H. W. Aitken, G. C. Hamilton, A. McLachlan, F. S. Graham, T. Sim, N. Robson, J. A. Baldey, W. K. Hamilton and J, A. Wright. The Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club wrote in reply to the council’s suggestion that the Gore-Invercargill road race on August 31 conclude at Gore. It regretted that it was not possible to adopt the suggestion as all arrangements had been dualized. Had the suggestion been made sooner the committee would have been pleased to arrange the race accordingly. The clerk of the Southland County Council advised that lhe drainage engineer of the council had reported on the matter of flooding of property in West Gore and the council desired that steps be taken to have a petition signed requesting the council to have the ditch from Coutts’ road to the highway deepened and widened. It was felt that (he work would be an excellent job for relief work under the No. 5 Scheme.

The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. Bitchener) advised that he had discussed the matter of the subsidy payable on the cost of a new traffic bridge with the chairman of the Main Highways Board. The board had given very careful consideration and regretted that it was unable ,o see its way clear to increase the measure of assistance from highways funds beyond the usual rates of subsidy applicable to bridge works. Messrs R. and F. Wallis, Ltd., asked for permission to construct a small semi-circular garden plot in front of their business premises in Norfolk street.

The request was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Works Committee.

The following recommendations of the Works Committee were considered and except as otherwise stated were adopted:— Application by relief workers for part of Block C for planting potatoes; It was decided to recommend that the application be declined as the ground had '.ready been handed over to the Hockey Association for improvements. Starting place of Gore-Invercargill Cycle Road Race: It was decided to permit the race to commence at the Post Office. Letter from P. Wilkins relatin to protection of pronerty from river encroachment: Mr Wilkins agreed to assist in protection work. It was decided to drag willows I m East Gore Domain for planting in order to protect the property. Laving concrete kerb, channel and footpath, Canning street: Il was decided to recommend that a footpath be laid on the north side of Canning street from Ardwick street to the portion that was formerly known as Rose street and from there on the south side of the street.

Opening up Church street: /ifter inspecting this street, it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayor to interview Mr 11. Anderson. It was also decided that if the street is to be opened up. that it be onened right through from Huron street to th< corner of Halton street and Railway Esplanade. Ontario Street: It was decided to recommend that this street be raised about a foot at the eastern entrance to the Itllmongery. When the work is in progress the Works Committee will inspect it. Thistle Street: It was decided that portion of this street be clcaned'off and gravelled. Finance Committee. The following recommendations of the Finance Committee were adopted unless otherwise stated: — Tenders for alterations to Town Hall: Five tenders were received for this work and it was decided to recommend that the tender from Martin and Mallon at £869 8/6 be accepted as per amended specifications. Letters from Southland County Council and Engineer, No. 18 District Highways Council. These letters relating to plans of new traffic bridge were placed before the committee and the Town Clerk advised that he had written the Main Highways Board instructing it to prepare plans. Letter from the secretary of the Fire Brigade relating to insurance: This letter was considered by the committee and the Town Clerk obtained further information from an insurance company. As the superintendent of the Fire Brigade was out of town, it was decided to leave the matter in the bands of the Town Clerk to interview him on his return and report to the council. Closing of Qi’dsal stieet by Railway Department: It was decided that a letter of protest be forwarded to the engineer, New Zealand Railway:. Baths Loan: That the necessary application be made to the Loans Board for a proposal for baths loan of £3OOO for a period of 20 years, and that the Baths Committee be requested to guarantee at least £5OO.

Footpaths Loan: That the necessary application be made to the Loans Board for a loan of £6OOO for fo tpaths, the amount to be spent over a period of three years and the term of the loan to be 20 years. Subsidy on Loans: That the Town Clerk make application to he Unemployment Board for a subsidy on loans in the event of them being carried by the ratepayers.
