INVERCARGILL BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Invercargill branch of the W.D.F.U. was held on Friday, August 16, when Mrs G. McDonald presided over a good attendance of members. The roll-call for the afternoon “Reminiscences of Childhood Days,” proved very interesting and amusing. Mrs C. McKenzie was the winner for the year of the monthly best bloom competition, with Mrs Russell a close second. It was decided to hold a social afternoon in September to make a presentation to Miss Miller. Miss Johnston sang “Look up to the Sunrise,” and as an encore “Bird Songs at Eventide.” Mrs J. Evans demonstrated the upholstering and respringing of chairs, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. HEDGEHOPE BRANCH. There was a large attendance of members at the August meeting of the Hedgehope branch of the W.D.F.U., Mrs Young presiding. In sympathy with the Jukes and Dick families, the meeting observed two minutes silence. Mrs Jonhston, of Waimumu, assisted by Miss Gregor, gave a demonstration on the making of cane trays which was followed with much interest by all. A motion of thanks and appreciation to the demonstrators moved by' Miss McDonald, was carried by acclamation. The roll call, “Old Photographs,” was the cause of considerable amusement. The competition, shortbread, attracted a large number of entries, the result being: Mrs Young 1, Mrs Sanderson 2, Miss McDonald 3.
