PUKERAU NOTES

IDEAL SPRING WEATHER. (From Our Correspondent.) Ideal spring weather still continues and pastures are showing a perceptible growth. July was an unusually dry month, only 92 points of rain being recorded. Frosts, however, were frequent. Stock of all kinds have wintered well under the genial weather conditions, and fears of a shortage of turnips have been dispelled. Ploughing operations have been completed and in some cases cultivation work is being carried out. Some topdressing of pastures is also being done, but the bulk of this work this season was taken in hand in the autumn. It is evident that larger areas than usual will be devoted to both root and grain crops this year. A large number of ladies assembled at the home of Mr and Mrs George Scott last Thursday afternoon when a party arranged by Mesdames Maslin, Scott and S. Edwards was held in order to raise funds in connection with the forthcoming fete to be held by the Ladies’ Guild. Several competitions were arranged during the afternoon with the following results: Treasure hunt. Miss Bain; nail driving, Mrs E. France; placing a pig’s tail, Mrs L. Millar; quoits, Miss A. McDonald; tearing a model of a horse out of paper, Mrs P. Millar. Afternoon tea was served in the dining-room, when a lucky cup was won by Miss Bain, who contributed two elocutionary items. Before dispersing Mrs Maslin thanked the ladies for attending, also Mr and Mrs Scott for the use of their residence and grounds.

The progressive euchre tournament held last Friday evening in aid of the school piano funds attracted an attendance of 32 players. The prize winners were Mrs O’Hagan and Miss E. Speden first and second respectively in the ladies’ section and Messrs G. Valentine and J. Taylor in the men’s section. A short programme of dances followed, Mr King supplying the music and Mr Burrows officiating as master of ceremonies.
