RIVERTON NOTES

THE ATHENAEUM. (From Our Correspondent.) At the monthly meeting of the Athenaeum Committee there were present: Mr J. A. C. Mackenzie (chairman), Mrs W. Gunnion, Messrs T. Borland, M. McKone, A. D. Angus, G. W. Smith and x’. R. Winton. A short discussion took place on the book censoring question, and it was eventually decided to discontinue the practice. The committee was authorized to purchase another cosignment of new books at a total cost of £5. Messrs Mackenzie, Crawford and Winton were elected a works committee and were instructed to bring forward a report for next meeting dealing with proposed alterations of the interior of the building. The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society, held in the Rest Room, was well attended. The secretary was instructed to write Mr W. Patterson thanking him for donating and carting a load of gravel for the new concrete path. Nurse Wilson’s report for the month of July was read and adopted, four new cases being reported. The sum of £4 19/3 was gratefully received from the Riverton branch of W.D.F.U. being the half profits of the recent Plunket Welfare Society effort. The treasurer reported having pencilled Fleck’s Hall for the society’ on general election day when an afternoon tea service will be available. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs E. B. Patrick, and the secretary was instructed to write wishing Mr Patrick a speedy return to health. The members of the Young Ladies’ Guild, assisted by the ladies of the choir entertained the lady members of the congregation to a musical evening in the Sunday School Hall. The programme was comprised of national songs of various countries. The hall, which was transformed into a lounge for the occasion, was artistically’ decorated with bowls of evergreen foliage and vases of Iceland poppies. The following ladies attired in fancy national Costumes represented the various countries, viz:—Britannia, Miss M. Patrick; England, Miss D. Galloway; Scotland, Miss Peggy Playfair; Ireland, Miss Mary Robertson; Wales, Mrs T, Borland; France, Miss E. Tweedi:; Spain, Miss V. Cassels; Canada, Mrs A. Calder; New Zealand, Miss D. Diackmore; America, Miss N. Robertson.

The programme rendered comprised: Song of Welcome; recitation, “The Glory of the Garden.” by Miss Jean Playfair; songs of England: “British Grenadiers,” “Drink to Me Only,” “Sweet and Low,” “A Capital Ship,” by the glee party; dance, Sailor’s Hornpipe, Miss Irene Templeton; Scotland: Solo, “Lochnagar,” Miss Peggy Playfair; “Scots Wha Hae,” “Cornin’ Thro’ the Rye,” “Will Ye no come Back,” glee party; highland fling dance by Miss Nalda Walker; Ireland: Solo, “The Fairy Tales of Ireland.” by Miss Mary Robertson; “The Minstrel Boy.” “Dear Little Shamrock,” “Come Back to Erin,” by glee party; dance, Irish jig, Miss Evelyn Cloughley; Wales: “The Ash Grove,” “All Through the Night,” “Deck the Hall,” glee party: France: “The Marseillaise,” “Vive L’Amour.” glee party; pianoforte duet, “Chilperic,” Misses Robertson; Spain: “Spanish Cavalier,” “Juanita,” glee party; “Canada: “Jingle Bells,” “Canadian Boat Song,” “The Maple Leaf for Ever,” glee party; highland dance, Miss Evelyn Cloughley; Germany: “The Loreley,” glee party; Dutch dance, Misses Marion Smith and Bathnia Trembath; piano accompaniste, Miss Betty Englebretson; New Zealand: “E Pari Ra,” “Hoea Ra.” glee party; America: “Polly Wolly,” “Oh Susannah,” “John Brown’s Body,” “Carry Me back to Old Virginny,” glee party; pianoforte duet, “A Perfect Day,” Misses Daphne

Blackmore and Viola Cassels; “Goodnight Ladies,” glee party. Miss May Robertson made an efficient accompaniste. Tire following are the basketball results of matches played in Riverton during the week:—Riverton A 17 v. Colac 6; Riverton B 12 v. Otautau 8; Fairfax 9 v. Waipango 6; Pahia a bye. The monthly meeting of the Methodist Gardening Club was held on Friday evening, when there was a large attendance of members and Mr T. King, the president, occupied the chair. The speaker for the evening was Mr H. Gazzard, of Otautau, who dealt chiefly with gardening tips. The monthly competition for the best bloom was won by Mrs James Fleck, South Riverton. The Anglican Ladies’ Guild held., a “cake day” in Fleck’s Hall on Saturday afternoon when the returns were satisfactory. The Rev. N. Luker, who has had charge of the Riverton district parish of the Anglican Church for the past two years, leaves shortly for the Bluff to where he has been transferred.
