CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
GORE COMMITTEE MEETS. The committee of the Gore Chamber of Commerce met last evening when Mr A. T. Newman presided over an attendance of Messrs A. B. Caverhill, J. Hunter, W. Scobie, C. R. Wilkinson, R. S. Green, H. W. Pascoe, H. A. Price, W. B. Johnston, R. Wallis and A. H. Aitken (secretary). The Southland League invited the chamber to supply information and opinions concerning the suggested milling of timber in the native bush at Piano Flat.
It was decided to support the action of the league in opposing sawmilling in the bush. A letter was received from the Manawatu Employers’ Association asking for support to a petition to be submitted to Parliament requesting the Government to take a poll at the next general election on the question of a national half-holiday. It was contended that a national Saturday halfholiday would be in the best interests of the country.
It was decided to support the proposal to take a national poll on the question.
