The Tamatea sails at 10.15 a.m. to-day on her weekly visit to Stewart Island. She returns to Bluff late this afternoon. The Waimarino sailed from Wellington for Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff at 9 p.m. on Monday. She should arrive here on Thursday morning. With a cargo of raw sugar from Java, the steamer Dalcairn is due at Auckland on August 16. From Sydney and Wellington, the Union Company R.M.S. Makura was due at Papeete on Monday. The vessel should reach San Francisco on August 23. After doing duty at Lyttelton for the last 27 years as a coal hulk, the Waiitl. formerly a steel sailing vessel, has been sold by the Union Steam Ship Company to Mr Duncan Macdonald for breaking up. En route from San Francisco, the Union Company’s R.M.S. Maunganui is due at Wellington on August 19. She will leave there again the following day for Sydney. The Melbourne Steamship Company’s new motor ship Duntroon, 10.500 tons, which has just been built for the Australian Inter-State service, averaged 19 knots on her trials. She is expected to sail for Melbourne this month in charge of Captain Roy. The - .3 Gangway Company, of Walls-end-on-Tyne. have recently equipped the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s Akaroa and Tamaroa with patent self-levelling step accommodation ladders. Other companies that have recently adopted them are the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd. the British India Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., and the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. Pacific Coast shipyards will have the exclusive right to bid on the building of a huge floating steel dry dock for the naval station at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. The new dock, with ship-type hull to facilitate transoceanic towing to the centre of the fleet, will be a one-piece structure so enormous

that it cannot transit the Panama Canal. Displacing some 32,000 tons, 1175 feet m beam, and approximately 1000 feet long, the structure wiil be able to lift the navy s largest capital ships.
