RADIO CLUB

MONTHLY MEETING RECENT ACTIVITIES The monthly meeting of the Southland Radio Club was held on Monday evening when the following were P r ® s “ ent: Messrs A. W. Jones (in the chair), F. Simpson, J. Pickard, D. McEwan, G. Skipworth, Riddell, G. L. Teychenne, A. Scott, T. H. Watson, A. E. Jordan and J. S. Haywood (secretary). Mr Simpson reported that the studio equipment required attention and he was authorized to give effect to his recommendation. Very favourable reports were received of the relay of the St. Andrews Scottish Society’s recent function. Letters were received from country listeners expressing their pleasure at the programmes broadcast by thO local station. The chairman reported that both Mr Cheyne and Mr Mclntyre were meeting with a ready response in enrolling new members. To date approximately 800 had renewed their subscriptions. The two relays each week from Dunedin were costing £l4O and the Broadcasting Board had agreed to meet this expense. Tlie programme committee was requested to secure a suitable melody for closing down the programme at the station. A letter was received from the Referees’ Association thanking the club for allowing it to put over regular talks, and stating that this series had now been completed for the current year. The Broadcasting Board forwarded a box of records which have been put in the stock of the local club. Regret was expressed that the Southland Rugby Pnion had not seen fit to allow the club to broadcast the OtagoSouthland match. The chairman reported that the club would have been willing to have paid a reasonable fee if permission had been granted. Steps had been taken to obtain the broadcast both for Otago and Southland listeners, but without success. Mr Skipworth reported that for the 22nd inst. a special programme had been arranged to be presented by the Jordan family, and a special Scots’ night arranged by Mr W. Aitchison had been fixed for the 29th.

The question of a new agreement with the station owner was considered in detail, and it was decided that the finalizing of it be held over until the next meeting of the club. A statement of receipts and expenditure for the current year was presented at. the meeting and a recommendation in regard to staff out-payments as submitted by the finance committee was approved. The secretary reported that the club had a credit balance at present of £l5.

It was decided to grant a donation of £1 1/- to each of the two Southland DX clubs.
