MR LYONS IN SYDNEY REFERENCE TO MEAT AGREEMENT SUBSTANTIAL ADVANCE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.40 p.m.) Sydney, August 12. The Rt. Hon. J. A. Lyons was given a tumultuous reception at a welcome home luncheon given by the United Australia Party to-day. Replying to the speeches, Mr Lyons said it had been gratifying to find such wide approval in Australia of the short-term agreement reached in London. This agreement involved a substantial advance in the volume of the Commonwealth’s meat trade with the United Kingdom. “It would be to the advantage of the Empire if the British Government, in contemplating a renewal of the Argentine agreement or in making any new agreement with countries in a similar position to the Argentine, showed less concern for foreign producers and more for the great British Dominions like Australia,” he said. “I recognize that the United Kingdom in making the agreement with the Argentine had no intention of departing from the principle subscribed to at Ottawa.”

Mr Lyons described the Argentine agreement as totally inconsistent with the principle of Ottawa, and expressed great confidence that it would not be renewed in its present form. He urged that at the earliest possible date Australian meat producers should follow the example of New Zealand producers and set. up a small but representative meat export control board.
