MINISTERIAL. The Hon. S. G. Smith (Minister of Education and Minister of Employment) will arrive in Invercargill on Thursday. He will give a public address in Smith’s Hall in the evening, when he intends dealing with the Government’s policy over recent years, particularly in regard to the unemployment problem. '■Mr H. S. Bird, formerly inspector of police at Invercargill, is spending a week in Southland renewing friendsnips. Mr F. J. Burton returned to Wellington a few days ago after inspecting the South Island branches of J. R. McKenzie, Ltd. Mr J. A. F. Cundy, chief clerk in the railway engineer’s office, is leaving Invercargill on August 20 to take up a similar position in Wanganui. Mr G. D. Smart, who is in charge of the train running department at the local railway offices, returned from annual leave by the mid-day express yesterday. The annual meeting of the Wyndham Agricultural and Pastoral Society last evening paid a tribute to the memory of two life members of the society— Messrs T. Ayson and E. G. Macpherson—who died during the year. The Hon. Mr Justice Kennedy, who will preside over the quarterly sitting of the Supreme Court in Invercargill to-day, arrived by the mid-day express yesterday. He was accompanied by his associate (Mr H. K. Bullock).

The Wyndham Agricultural and Pastoral Society at its annual meeting last evening appointed Mrs Andrew Howe and Messrs John McDonald and Thomas Parrott honorary life members of the society. Mr Parrott is a foundation member.

Mr D. J. Wesney, president of the Southland Automobile Association, will be nominated for the position of president of the South Island Motor Union at the annual meeting of the union which will take place in Christchurch shortly. This decision was arrived at at the monthly meeting of the Automobile Association last evening. It was also decided to nominate Messrs E. J. Anderson, of Dunedin, W. R. Carey, of Christchurch, and R. P. Furness, of Marlborough, as vice-pre-sidents.

Mr P. S. Hickey, of the Gore Post Office staff, who has been promoted to the position of supervisor in the Telegraph Office at Christchurch, was farewelled by his fellow officers last evening. The postmaster (Mr M. Simpson) eulogized Mr Hickey’s services during his four years’ association with the Gore office, and on behalf of the staff presented him with a reading lamp, expressing best wishes for his future success. Miss B. Johnson, supervisor of the telephone exchange, Mr J. P. O’Sullivan, supervisor of the postal branch, and Mr E. J. Columb, overseer of the outside staff, also spoke. Mr Hickey suitably replied. The death of Mrs Jane McCartney, wife of Mr John McCartney, occurred at Gore on Saturday. She was born at Portobello in 1857, being a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Seaton, who were pioneer settlers of the Otago Peninsula. They came to New Zealand in the Philip Lang in 1848, and one of the late Mrs McCartney’s sisters, Mrs W. Allan, who is 92 years of age and who also came out in the Philip Lang, is still living in Dunedin. Mr James Seaton represented Caversham in Parliament for three terms. In 1881 Miss Jane Seatoij married Mr McCartney at Portobello, the ceremony _ being performed by the Rev. A. Greig, the oldest living Presbyterian minister in New Zealand, who celebrated his 97th birthday last Friday. Mr and Mrs McCartney settled at Chatton, where Mr McCartney, a district pioneer, farmed for many years. In 1904 they sold out and went to Gore, where they had resided ever since. The late Mrs McCartney is survived by five members of her own family, two brothers and three sisters; also by her husband, five sons, Mr James McCartney (Invercargill), Robert McCartney (Gore), Fred McCartney (Clinton), John McCartney (Mataura), and William McCartney (Gore), and three daughters, Mrs C. Murdoch (Paretai), Mrs A. Finlay (Invercargill) and Mrs B. Mitchell (Timaru). ___
