GOOD PROGRESS
NEW CONNECTING ROAD CAROLINE TO JOSEPHVILLE COMPLETION EXPECTED BY CHRISTMAS By Christmas motorists travelling from Invercargill to Lumsden or Kingston should not have to make the detour via Castle Rock, but should be able to use the new road linking Caroline and Josephville. The completion of this gap will not only shorten the distance between Invercargill and Lumsden by at least four miles, but will prove of great benefit to the settlers in the district. A farmer who now wishes to travel from Lumsden to Dipton has to cover 17 miles; while from Lumsden to Caroline he would cover 25 miles. With the opening of the new road these distances are reduced to eight. For some months a gang of about 40 men has been engaged in bridging the gap and has made excellent progress. There have been two camps, one on the Caroline end and one on the Josephville end. Work has been distributed over the full length of the new section and has proceeded well up to schedule. There is one climb on the route, but the grade is comparatively e3 The road from Josephville to Lumsden has received some attention, but it will probably have to be improved still more if motorists are to receive the full benefit of the direct route which the completion of the CarolineJosephville link provides. Both Dipton and Lumsden should benefit considerably from the opening of the road. At present both townships are virtually off the main highway, but motorists will pass through both when the direct route is used. The forging of the link will be even more greatly appreciated when the Kingston-Queenstown road is opened.
