TUTAPERE NOTES

PIPE BAND. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the West District Caledonian Pipe Band was held last Monday evening. In the absence of the president Mr J. Duff occupied the chair.

The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. A credit balance of £7 17/8 was shown. Although the balance is comparatively small the report showed that the expenditure of the band had been exceptionally heavy during the past year. The chairman, in his remarks, stated that in his opinion the band had made a very creditable showing for the year under the circumstances.

The election of officers resulted: President, Mr A. L. B. Nairn; vicepresidents, Messrs A. McEwan, J. Young, W. Diack, B. Brookes, J. Mair, W. J. Erskine, H. Diack, D. Campbell, A. Robertson, A. Whyte, T. Cochran, H. McDonald, I. Skeoch, A. Fraser and R. M. Erskine; secretary, Mr A. Sutherland; drum major, Mr A. Dickson; drum sergeant, Mr H. Aitcheson; drum corporal, Mr W. Froude; pipe major, Mr D. Pierce, pipe sergeant, Mr R. Irvine; pipe corporal, Mr D. Burns. At the conclusion of the business meeting the annual banquet was held and proved a great success. The president, Mr Nairn, presided. There was a large attendance including one of the old foundation members of the local band. On the well-laden table was a Scotch haggis, which was duly piped in by members of the band. During the evening selections were played by members of the band and items were contributed by Messrs J. Duff, W. Diack and Stalker (Wyndham), while several supporters gave humorous items. The trophies won during the year were presented. A gold medal presented by Messrs J. McLean and A. Whyte for the best attendance at practices and parades was presented by Mr H. McDonald to Piper A. Sutherland. A miniature cup donated by Mr A. Fraser for the most improved sidedrummer was presented by the donor to Drummer W. Froude. A miniature cup donated by Mr A. Nairn for ' the most improved piper was presented by Mr A. Dickson to Piper R. Campbell. An appropriate toast list was honoured. Waiau Welfare Society. The monthly meeting of the Waiau Welfare Society was held on Thursday, the president, Mrs G. Stancombe, presiding. It was reported that the gross takings for the lamplighters’ ball were

£44 and that a gratifying net sum was available. Basketball Dance. The Waiau Basketball Sub-Associ-ation held a successful dance in Lawson’s Hall on Wednesday evening, several pounds being raised to swell the funds. Music was supplied by the Regent Orchestra (Ohai), and extras were played by Mr J. McLean. Golf. The winner of Mrs Beaton’s prize was Miss Mollie Charlton, who reduced her handicap by four strokes. The match for the golf ball was won by Mrs K. Beaton. Flag 500. There was a good attendance at the flag 500 tournament run by the Tuatapere Basketball Club on Tuesday evening. The prize winners were Messrs J. and W. Mangan.
