OHAI NOTES

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT (From Our Correspondent.) A basketball tournament run under the auspices of the local Basketball Club, was held recently in the Public Hall, when a record number of entries were received. A large number of spectators assembled to watch some very interesting games and the evening turned out most successful. Messrs J. W. Martin (Ohai), A. Grant (Nightcaps) and R. Reed (Limehills) refereed, while Messrs VZ. Jones, W. Welsh and R. Bird acted as timekeepers and scorers. Following were the scores:— Senior. Ohai v. Tuatapere, 12—5; Ohai v. Nightcaps, 10—9; Tuatapere v. Nightcaps, 4—5. Winners.—Ohai. Junior. First Round.—Colac Bay a bye; Wairio v. Tuatapere o—3; Limehills v. Ohai C, 13—2; Ohai B v. Otautau, 3 —4. Second Round.—Colac Bay v. Tuatapere, 7—6; Limehills v. Otautau 7—2. Final.—Colac Bay v. Limehills 4—6. Winners.—Limehills. Men’s Games. Ohai A v. Ohai B, 3—o; Diggers v. Nightcaps, 2—6; Hayseeds v. Wairio, 4—l; Nightcaps v. Hayseeds, 3 —l. Final.—Ohai A v. Nightcaps,_ o—s. Nightcaps Men v. Ohai Ladies, 4—2. A dance followed the tournament and was well attended. Music was supplied by Messrs Heller and Smith. Community Singing. Community singing was held in the Public Hall on Monday evening under the conductorship of Mr W. Richards. The proceeds were in aid of the Nightcaps District Band, and a fair number attended. .Items were given by Mrs W. Richards and Messrs Richards, Young and Sheehan. Farewell Parties. Quite a few functions have been arranged for Mr W. Welsh of the local Post Office who has been advised of his transfer to the Gore office. Members of the Presbyterian Bible Class met at the; residence of Mr and Mrs W. Welsh on Tuesday evening and a very happy time was spent in games and competitions. The “mystery parcel” competition was won by Mrs Stevenson and. Mr W. Welsh, sen. At a suitable interval the Rev. Stevenson presented the guest with a book as a gift from the Bible Class members and wished him every success in his new sphere. Other speakers were Mrs C. Balneaves and Mr H. Gardiner. Mrs Baineaves expressed regret at losing such a valuable member of the Bible Class and hoped when he settled in Gore he would continue to take an interest in Bible Class affairs. Mr Welsh suitably replied and was accorded musical honours. The opportunity was taken of making a presentation to Miss Nova Allison who left recently to take up a position in the Riverton Hospital. The Rev. Stevenson expressed pleasure at having the opportunity of acknowledging Miss Allison’s service to the Bible Class and, in asking her to accept a book on behalf of her fellow members, wished her every success in her new work. Miss Allison briefly replied. During the evening items were given by the following: Song, Mr W. Welsh sen.; vocal duet, Messrs D. Heller and N. Gardiner; song Miss N. Allison. Those present were: Mr and Mrs W. Welsh, the Rev. and Mrs Stevenson, Mrs Baineaves, Misses Jessie Edmond, Nova Allison, Isobel Welsh, Eileen McKay, Molly Hunter, Molly Allisonf P. Allison. Messrs H. Gardiner, W. Welsh, D. Heller, A. Smeaton D. Welsh, J. Smeaton, A. Johnstone and W. Craig. Mrs J. Thompson arranged a surprise party on Saturday evening in honour of Mr W. Welsh at his parents’ residence. The evening took the form of a dance, music being supplied by Mr H. Ferguson and a happy time was spent by all present. During the evening Mr R. Heller entertained with a tap dance which was much appreciated. On behalf of those present Mr W. Jones asked the guest to accept a fountain pen as a token of the esteem in which he was held by the young people of Ohai, and also expressed regret at losing such a valuable and willing worker. At the same time he congratulated him on his promotion to the Gore Post Office and wished him every success. Mr Welsh thanked the company for the gift and their good wishes. At the conclusion of the evening Mr J. Thompson thanked Mr and Mrs Welsh for the use of their home. Those present were: Mr and Mrs W. Welsh, Mr and Mrs J. Thcfrnpson, Mr and Mrs A. McKenzie, Mrs R.
