AUSTRALIAN CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP. NEW ZEALANDERS’ POSITION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, July 21. Mr R. P. Heathwood, secretary of the Amateur Athletic Association, when informed that New Zealand was sending a team to compete in the Australian 10,000 metres cross-country championship, said: “I have heard nothing officially. Why are they coming? 'They are debarred under the race conditions from securing any of the honours.” PREVIOUS ADVICE SENT. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, July 22. The cable message from Mr Heathwood regarding the visit of the New Zealand cross country team to Australia was referred to Mr H. McCormick, Secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, who said he was at a loss to understand the first part of the cable. Mr McCormick stated that the team was being sent and a reply had been received from Mr Heathwood. As for the second part of the message, that was correct, and the position was known by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. It had been stated at the last meeting of the N.Z.A.A.A. Council that members of the New Zealand team, in the event of being successful, would be unable to take the honours.
