RUGBY FOOTBALL.

During the week-end the Waiau Football Club entertained a visiting team from Roxburgh. Mi- J. King (Tuatapere) donated a cup for annual competition between the two teams to be played alternately at Roxburgh and Tuatapere. On Saturday the visitors were shown through a bush sawmill at work and on Sunday morning were taken for a motor tour round the district.
Saturday afternoon was ideal for football and the match was accorded excellent support from the public. The play was clean and fast, Roxburgh in particular endeavouring all the time to make open football. The forwards were fairly even, but the visitors were shaded by the home team’s backs. The final score was Waiau 24, Roxburgh 14. Mr D. Collie was referee.
On Saturday night the visitors were entertained when Mr M. Dunlay, president of the Roxburgh Club, presented the King Cup to the Waiau captain, E. Mclntyre. Mr C. Payne, president of the Waiau Club, was in the chair, and the following toasts were honoured: “The King,” Mr C. Payne; “Rugby,” Mr J. Mclntyre, sen., response; chorus “On the Ball”; “Kindred Sports,” Mr J. C. Beer, response Mr S. Walker; “The All Blacks and the Maoris,” Mr G. E. Charlton;“The Donor of the King Cup,” Mr G. Porter, response Mr J. King; “The Roxburgh Football Club,” chairman; “Roxburgh Football Team,” Mr E. Mclntyre, response Mr Dryden; “The Ladies,” Mr R. Knowler, response D. Jenkins; “The Chairman,” Mr J. King, response Mr C. Payne. Items were contributed by Messrs D. McLeod, H. Bates, H. Jackson, G. McLeod, J. Ford, C. Woods, S. Walker, G. E. Charlton, Hayes and Wood (Roxburgh). Mr L. Henderson entertained the gathering with deer-stalking stories and quoted figures from the recent extensive culling in the district, and Mr T. Ward in a forceful speech compared the merits of respective football teams of yesterday and to-day, being of the opinion that New Zealand must look to her laurels. Papatotara Basketball. The Papatotara Basketball Club held a most successful gymkhana on Wednesday afternoon and evening. A large sum was raised to augment the club’s funds and the club members have every reason to be proud of the success of their efforts. The games and competitions attracted large entries. The various winners were: Ladies’ nail-driving, Miss R. Maxted; ladies’ sawing, Miss M. Ogilvie; putting, Mrs D. Whyte; men’s nail driving, Mr B. Grey; men’s beauty contest, Mr B. Glendinning; bull board, Messrs J. Young, A. Rodgers, S. Kokay and J. Jacobson; shooting gallery, Messrs S. Kokay, J. Williams, W. Rodgers, S. Scott, B. Patterson; ladies’ shooting, Miss G. Fraser. Other competition winners were: Cushion, Mr Thomas; supper cloth, Mr W. Rodgers; mystery parcel, Mrs G. Muir; trip to Invercargill, Mrs Forbes; tea-set, Mrs Couchman. After the gymkhana a dance was held, music being supplied by Messrs H. Acker and S. Butcher. Basketball.
Tuatapere 11. B were defeated by Otaki on the Tuatapere court by 4 goals to 1. Mrs J. Austen was referee.
Tuatapere I. B visited Orepuki and were defeated by the home team by 17 goals to 6. On Wednesday Tuatapere A defeated Orepuki on the local court by 9 goals to 6.
