INVERCARGILL CONFERENCE.
YEAR’S EXTENSIVE CHARITY.
The annual meeting of the Invercargill Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society was held last evening, Mr G. T. Martin, the president, being in the chair. Proceedings opened with devotions conducted by the Right Rev. Monsignor Howard. The annual report, which was adopted on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr D. Lynch, stated: “The sum of £l2O 6/8 was spent in relieving distress in Invercargill and 410 articles of clothing, six blankets, and 37 pairs of boots, valued at £llB, were distributed from the wardrobe. The costs of administration were nil. We gratefully acknowledge the receipt of £35 4/- in donations, the Right Rev. Monsignor Howard contributing £lO 10/-, an anonymous donor £lO, the Reginald MacKinnon Trustees £6 10/- and other benefactors amounts totalling £8 4/-. Eighty-six honorary members were enrolled, increasing the revenue by £2l 10/-. An appeal is being made for additional honorary members and it is hoped that every adult member of the congregation will enrol and enable the work of the conference to be extended. The poor boxes at St. Mary’s, St. Theresa’s, Bluff, Lumsden, Mossbum and Winton provided £37 4/5 and members’ collections at meetings amounted to £9 1/-. During his recent visit his Lordship Bishop Whyte graciously lectured in aid of our funds. We desire to acknowledge donations of clothing, toys, and sweets, from the Southland Girl Guides, per Mrs R. S. Mclnnes, and a quantity of coal and groceries from the good deeds stall at the Boy Scouts Rally per G. E. T. Dorman. The conference is greatly indebted to the Ladies’ Sewing Guild for parcels of made-up clothing, and to many other kind friends for donations of clothing, boots etc. We desire to thank the Right Rev. Monsignor Howard and the Rey. Fathers McKay and Murphy for their co-operation during the year; Mr M. J. Murfitt for his valued services as ward-
robe keeper; Mr W. J. Knell, honorary auditor, and all who assisted the conference with mondy or goods.”
