TROOPS FIRE
MOSLEM) RIOTERS TEN REPORTED KILLED TROUBLE AT LAHORE DEMOLITION OF MOSQUE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) Lahore, July 20. The Royal Scots were forced to fire four rounds on a huge crowd of Moslem rioters, killing probably 10 and wounding others, as a climax to a day and a night of mob defiance arising from the Sikh attempt to demolish a disused Moslem mosque situated in the grounds of the Sikh shrine. The mob resisted the police baton charges and smashed prison vans and threatened to overwhelm the police under cover of a barrage of brickbats. The troops were then called out, while Royal Air Force planes circled overhead. A later message states that the casualties are uncertain as the rioteis carried off the dead, but three were later found dead. Fifty police, including five British, were injured by stonethrowing. Indian cavalry charged and met a barrage of brickbats. One cavalryman was thrown from his horse into a drain where he was trampled to death by the terrified animal. The crowd was still menacing and despite the curfew it refused to leave the streets, which armoured cars are patrolling.
