GARSTON NOTES

VALEDICTORY. (From Our Correspondent.) Mr Bernard Kelly, who has been headmaster of the Athol school for many years past and who has been ■transferred to the Wendon school, near Riversdale, was farewelled by a large number of friends and well-wishers on the eve of his departure for his new home. The social took place in the Athol hall and during the evening Mr Kelly was the recipient of several presentations from parents, children and various clubs in the district. Speeches eulogizing the guest of honour were made, special reference being made to his efficiency as a teacher, the excellence of his discipline and his popularity with children and parents. MiKelly was a keen sportsman and also took a great interest in the social life of the community. He was also fond of oversea travelling and his occasional “travel talks” addressed to the members of the W.D.F.U. were much appreciated. Songs and recitations interspersed with dancing helped to make a most enjoyable function.

About forty young people gathered at the residence of Mk and Mrs Cowan, Athol, to welcome them home on their return from their honeymoon. Mr Cowan has been a reside:., of Athol

for some time, and Mrs Cowan (formerly Miss N. Price) is the daughterof old and respected residents. The Weather. July is slipping past and so far the weather has been mild. Polyanthus, auriculas, and also roses, have bloomed the whole winter. Personal. Mrs J. Soper, who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dunedin, is now improving in health. Mrs A. McCaughan is in Dunedin, where she is making a good recovery under medical treatment. Miss Hazel Soper, Lorneville, has been visiting friends in the district. Miss Millar, Knapdale, who has been visiting friends at Nokomai, has returned home. Mr and Mrs Pritchard have left for Lake Hayes, Arrowtown, where the latter’s mother, Mrs Hugh Mcßride, is seriously ill. Mrs D. McMillan and family, Nokomai, are spending a holiday at North East Valley, Dunedin. Mr McMillan returned home during the week. Mr A. Cameron, Nokomai, was a recent visitor to Invercargill. Mr W. Gordon, Burnside, has been visiting his sons at Nightcaps. Miss F. Adams, Fairlight, is spending an extended holiday in Christchurch. Miss J. Soper spent the week-end in Dunedin. Misses F. Price, Nokomai, and Joan Simonsen, Athol, were chosen to attend the girls’ educational classes in connection with the W.D.F.U. held recently in Invercargill.
