TAPANUI NOTES

MOUNTED RIFLES SUCCESS.

B Squadron, Otago Mounted Rifles, obtained the highest average in the regiment’s annual course in musketry, and will hold for a year the Otago Hussars’ Challenge Shield. B Squadron represented Gore, Heriot, Kelso, Lawrence and Beaumont troops.

Streamers and balloons decorated the Heriot Hall for the Young People's ball. Bain’s Orchestra (Gore) provided the music and Messrs G. Sim and B. Baxter were M.C’s. Mr G. Lang played extras.

The Monte Carlo fox-trot was won by Miss Bunting and Mi’ G. Duff, and the lucky spot waltz by Mr and Mrs S. Brensell. At the Oddfellows’ Hall, Tapanui, Mr M. Kirkpatrick, Greenvale, gave an interesting address to returned soldiers on “The Camel Corps and Experiences in Palestine.” Mr Kirkpatrick briefly outlined the position of Turkey with regard to the war and then told of the work done by the Camel Corps, speaking of the effectiveness of camels instead of horses in the desert.

Mr Boylen, who moved the vote of thanks to Mr Kirkpatrick, said they were indebted to Mr Kirkpatrick for his talk which was enjoyed by all. A social hour followed, many war reminiscences being exchanged, and incidents at the front related.

The Town Hall, Tapanui was well filled on Wednesday evening for the second annual tournament of the Basketball Club. Eighteen teams entered, Tapanui, Kelso, Heriot and Waikoikoi sending representatives. The sum of £25 was taken at the door. Misses A. Grant, G. Munyard, Messrs G. Duff and O. Munyard were referees, Mr J. S. Varcoe timekeeper, Mr T. Varcoe scorer. The ladies’ championship was won by Waikoikoi A and the Tapanui Football Club won the men’s, defeating the “Has Beens” by six goals to four.

Extra time had to be played in the ladies’ championship between ’Koi A and Heriot Basketball Club, the final score being three goals to two. The final then lay between ’Koi A Basketball Club (ladies) and Tapanui Football Club (men), and a very keen contest resulted, but the weight and height of the men gave them victory by four goals to three. The Mayor, Mr J. S. Varcoe, presented to the captains of the two teams in the final, the trophies won by them, Miss S. Simmers (’Koi) and Mr Peat

(Tapanui) replying for their teams. Mrs W. Rutherford, President of the West Otago Basketball Association, thanked, on behalf of the basketball clubs, Messrs G. Lindsay, W. J. McKenzie and D. Stark (all of Waikoikoi) for their generous donation of a cup for annual competition between teams. The name of the winning club would be inscribed on the cup each year. After supper an enjoyable dance was held to music supplied by the Blue Mountain Melodymakers’ Orchestra, Miss R. Crawford (piano), Messrs Trusler and J. Rodger (accordeons), E. Greaves (effects) and G. Graigie (trumpet). Mr Lang (Heriot) kindly played an extra. Mr Munyard was M.C. The final shoot of the cup matches was fired on Saturday on the Tapanui rifle range. Rifleman Sim annexed the cup, his score being 521, Rifleman Kirk was second with 505 points. Rifleman J. Burnett and W. Kirk each scored a possible at the 500 yards range, and Mr Varcoe who had donated a cup to any rifleman scoring a possible during the season, kindly gave instead two miniature cups. The cup presented by Mr E. C. Sim to the rifleman with the highest aggregate in the four shoots for the cup, was won by Rifleman A. Gow. President Rodger presented the cups to Rifleman Sim and Gow, and congratulated them on their success. Women’s Division. The president, Mrs Potts, presiaed over a good attendance of members of lhe W.D. in Crookston Hall on Thursday. The roll call was “Tongue Twisters,” and the competition “Best article from a yard of cretonne” which was won by Mrs M. Potts wtih a footstool. Mrs O. Potts was second with a collapsible box. Mesdames Evans and Bathgate gave a play reading, “Lost Property,” and three competitions arranged by Miss M. Sim were won by Misses G. Fleming, M. Evans and Mrs M. Potts. The Young Farmers’ Club then joined the W.D. at supper. At Waikoikoi on Tuesday evening the monthly meeting of the Women’s Division was well attended. A competition and demonstration by Mrs J. Simmers wes very interesting. Miss Simmers showed items' made from bags: 1, handkerchiefs; 2, traycloth; 3, knitting bag; 4, duchesse set of mats; 5, bedspread, all of which were beautifully made and worked. The competition was to guess what the bags had contained. Mesdames Gray, Hosie, and Bruce were equal first with four correct answers. The monthly competition “The best bloom” was won by Mrs J. McCall with an anemone. The members of the Farmers’ Union judged the swedes grown by W.D. members this season, awarding first prize to Miss Annie Simmers. The
