IMPERIAL EX-SERVICEMEN.

AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION.

The three-weekly open evening of the Imperial Ex-Servicemen’s Social Club was held in Everybody’s on Thursday, when a most enjoyable time was spent by the members, their wives, and friends. Approximately 100 people were present. Among the guests were Mr Andrew Wilson, president of the South African Veterans’ Association, Mr M. T. Francis, secretary of the South African Veterans’ Association, and Mr Abraham Wachner.

The chairman, Mr R. Smith, in his opening remarks, mentioned his pleasure at seeing such a large gathering, and welcomed the president and secretary of the South African War Veterans’ Association. He stated that he was sorry the president and secretary of the R.S.A. were unable to attend. Mr Francis, in reply, said he was very pleased to be present, and expressed surprise at such a large gathering. The chairman mentioned that a congratulatory letter had been received from an Imperial ex-serviceman at Wellington in connection with the Social Club’s successful request in regard to Imperial ex-servicemen’s pensions.

An interesting programme consisting of songs and dances was provided by the following: Mr R. Kelman, song; Mr Harvey and son, concertina items; Mr W. Crawford, dancing doll; Mr Wilkinson, song with guitar; Mr F. Keeler, accordion items; Miss Hunter, song; Mr R. Smith, step dance. The accompanists were Mr G. Tisbury (piano) and Mr Henderson (’cello). The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs Bruce, the prizes being donated by Mr Mabson and the Social Club Committee. Mr Wachner also showed his keen interest by donating slippers to the winners of a spot waltz. They were won by Mr Harvey, jun., and partner. The question of a reunion is to be discussed by the committee at a later date. '
