THE WEEKLY NEWS

SPECIAL SOUTHLAND ISSUE. In the issue of The Weekly News, Auckland, for July 17, a large amount of space is devoted to Southland, both in the letterpress and in the illustration sections. In fact it is a special Southland issue, with a photograph of First Church, Invercargill, on the front page. An article on Invercargill gives a brief sketch of the settlement and progress of the town and province. Other articles cover the scenic resorts of the district, its sporting attractions and records, the industries of town and country, and local body administration, while Mr W. A. Ott contributes a special article on Bluff Harbour and Mr A. W. Rodger one on the coal-mines of Ohai. The first editorial has for its subject “The fertile province of Southland,” and there is another editorial on the first farm page under the heading “Southland Sets a Standard.” Of the illustrated full pages no fewer than twelve are given up to Invercargill and Southland and the people and industries of the province and its capital, while there are quite a number of illustrations in the news pages also. The workmanship is excellent and the issue as a whole is a first-class advertisement for this part of the Dominion. It is to be hoped that the matter will be widely read and the illustrations widely studied in the North, where a large percentage of the population are completely ignorant of the. south, its achievements and potentialities.
