FIERCE STORM

DAMAGE IN MELBOURNE.

(United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.) Melbourne, July 19. A fierce gale is lashing Melbourne. The inter-State liner Westralia from Perth was forced to anchor in the bay, and she sent her passengers ashore in tugs. A good deal of damage has been done on the foreshore. Piers were damaged and small craft blown ashore. Fences were also levelled in the suburbs. SHIPPING HAMPERED EXTENSIVE PROPERTY DAMAGE. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) The whole of the southern portion of the State is being swept by a 45mile an hour gale, considerably hampering shipping and doing extensive damage to properly and electric light and telegraph lines. Attempts to berth the Monterey today proved futile. The liner was finally compelled to anchor off Port Melbourne. Smaller ships were unable to enter the Yarra river.

Reports from the country state that there have been heavy falls of snow. A regular blizzard is prevailing in the Southern Australian Alps.
