AIR ATTACKS

NAVY’S PRECAUTIONS STRONGER ARMAMENT PROPOSED NEW LONG-RANGE GUNS (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.15 p.m.) London, July 19. The Navy is about to double, and eventually quadruple, its anti-aircraft armament, states the naval correspondent of the Dailj’ Telegraph. This is a tacit admission of the potency of air attack, which is expected to be more formidable as aviation progresses. The Nelson and the Rodney, carry six 4.7inch anti-aircraft guns and the other latest battleships and cruisers 4-inch guns. The battleships Warspite and Malaya are undergoing refits and will be the first to have eight long-range guns, probably of a new calibre, all controlled as a unit. Each will be capable of firing 80 to 100 high explosive shells a minute at a sky target. The battleships which are being laid down in 1937 will each have 16 guns.
