HARRIERS

INVERCARGILL CLUB. The Southland cross-country championship takes place to-day and the club will defend the shield title. The struggle between the two clubs eligible to hold the shield should be a close one and much interest has been created by the prospect of a good race. Caversham harriers are again competing and while they are not eligible fox - the shield, they will probably - account for several of the individual trophies. While in Southland the Caversham members will be the guests of the Invercargill Club. , To-day’s race is to be run at the Southland racecourse and the course is very similar to that used last year, except that two rearrangements have been made to cut out a number of fences. The distance is exactly 10,000 metres, or 6.1 miles, the standard crosscountry distance. The country should be mostly dry and firm. The team picked to defend the shield is as follows: B. Crowther, A. H. Imbs, J. Metcalfe, H. Canning, H. Calder and V. Grenfell. The first five of these men home count for points. The B team is W. Pickard, G. Tait, J. Chaplin, J. Gordon, G. Ker and I. O’Brien. In the juniox - event the club will be represented by P. McLauchlan, R. Whyte, J. Cross, L. Cavanagh, F. Hislin, J. Johnson and W. Tait. In this race the first three men home win the teams’ trophy. The juniors cover one lap of the course only, the distance being just over 3 miles. The race is timed to start at 3 o’clock and all runners are urged to be at the course at 2.30. An entry fee of 1/will be payable and numbers will be issued to each man. ST. PAUL’S CLUB NOTES. Last Saturday some good training was done on the run from North Invercarcargill and all those who participated should feel the benefit. A. Hind seems to have fully recovered and is back in fine form. This afternoon the fourth Southland cross-country championship since the war will take place. For the first time a junior event will be held over a distance of three miles. The club teams in the senior event show many new names in their ranks, but the first team is considerably stronger than last year. Hind and Woods should be well up and close together. Henry should be third man, but some of the remainder may spring a surprise. All the team are fit as far as is possible, but one man has had to retire through sickness and another has had little opportunity to train this week. The juniors have no teams to consider, so every man must run his

hardest and get as far up as possible. McAlister, Stevens and N. Dorman are all fairly fit and should not be far away in the race. Whatever happens both events should prove very interesting and will show how far the sport has advanced in the past three years. Runners must be at the racecourse by the usual time, as it is hoped to start the events promptly
