UNEMPLOYMENT
GORE COMMITTEE MEETS.
The Gore Unemployment Committee met on Monday evening. Mr W. D. Shelton presided over the following members: G. W. Whittingham, A. T Newman, W. O’Bryne, F. M. Murray, S. Newell, M. M. Simpson, the Rev. H. C. Orchard and R. E. Melvin (secretary).
Mr Shelton reported that a deputation consisting of Messrs Whittingham, Trapski, Melvin and himself had waited on the chairman and secretary of the Southland Unemployment Committee regarding the reopening of scheme No. 5 for those workers who had refused to go to camp at Josephville. Mr Trapski had said that he proposed to employ 25 men on general road work for five days per week on a wage of 10/6 per day in . the riding. The chairman (Mr Gilkison) had said he was in favour of reopening the scheme as the wdrk was handy and the employment was for five days a week. In view of the fact that it was winter, he considered the request a reasonable one, and promised to support the Gore committee’s request, which would in due course he forwarded on to the Unemployment Board. Mr Shelton was thanked for his report, and a vote of thanks was also passed to Mr Newman for arranging the expenses of the deputation.
