BLUFF GRANITE

PROPOSED CLOSING OF QUARRY. DEPUTATION TO MR PERRELLE. In connection with the proposed closing at an early date of the Bluff granite quarry a deputation, appointed at a meeting at Bluff on Friday night and consisting of his Worship the Mayor (the Rev. A. E. Waite), Messrs A. Nichol, T. F. Doyle and the Town Clerk (Mr H. A. Ferguson), interviewed Mr P. A. de la Perrelle, M.P., at Winton yesterday, placing before him the circumstances. Mr Perrelle immediately despatched wires to the Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Employment, and the Hon. Adam Hamilton, explaining the serious effect upon Bluff the proposed cessation of work at the quarry would have, and urging the Ministers to use every endeavour to have the work continued. The Hon. R. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce, has also been communicated with.

The deputation also called upon Mr J. Gilkison, of the Central Unemployment Committee, and Mr W. Hinchey, president of the Southland League and chairman of the Southland Electric Power Board, both of whom promised to communicate immediately with Wellington.
