P. Leigh-Bennett describes a tug trip to ■ the Black Deep and back. One extract reads:— "Coming up the stream against the ebb and the traffic, under the pink and white amber glow of the sunset, one sees with inarticulate admiration the pageantry of shipping as it passes out to its jobs of work at sea, hurrying to get away before the week-end. The tall, sleek Cunarder: the I pompous, reticent P. and O.: the big, galalooking Jap with all her saloon lights on: I the curious little white ship having brought ice from Greenland, going home in ballast. ■ licking the dove-grey surface of the water with the crimson tongues of her propeller. A couple of half cargo, half passenger boats, little known but so comfy; one going to the Cape, another to the East. A greenfunnelled ‘Guinness’ boat pulsing up stream to be ready for Monday mornings discharge of London’s stout.” WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
