LUMSDEN NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of residents interested in the erection of a soldiers’ memorial in Lumsden was held last Wednesday. The chairman of the Town Board, Mr A Heath, presided. The idea had been mooted by the Lumsden Progressive League, and it had been decided to convene a public meeting to discuss the matter. After some discussion a committee was formed with Dr. Bell as chairman and Mr W. Thomson as secretary. Messrs J. Clouston and M. Reidy were appointed to interview other societies with a view to making a combined effort to raise funds. The monthly meeting of the Lumsden branch of the Plunket Society was held on. Friday, when Mrs Marshall presided over Mesdames Campbell, McAlister, Heath, Ogilvy, Ashby, Welsh, Irwin, Dore and Miss Martin. The nurses’ report for May was as follows: Homes visited, Lumsden 38, out stations 21; attendance at rooms, Lumsden, adults 26, babies 24, children 7; out stations, adults 156, babies 145, children 29; new cases, Lumsden 2, out stations 13. The general health had been satisfactory. The fortnightly euchre party held by the Plunket Society on Thursday was well attended. The prizes, which were donated by Mesdames Ogilvy, Ashby and Dore, were won by Mrs Ogilvy and Mr J. Ogilvy. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs C. Welsh and Mr W. Irwin.

On Thursday afternoon an enjoyable gift afternoon was held at the vicarage when members of the Anglican Ladies’ Guild and other organizations were present. Numerous gifts were received and sold, the funds of the guild benefiting considerably as a result. The new railway station to replace the one destroyed by fire is now occupied by the staff. The railway refreshment room was not rebuilt, but a lease of a site has been secured by Mr A. McAlister, who intends erecting an up-to-date building with a frontage to the main street directly opposite the Elbow Hotel.
