WOODLANDS NOTES

GIFT EVENING. (From Our Correspondent.) Prior to her wedding to Mr Gordon Brown last week, Miss Margaret GarthWaite was the guest of honour at a gift evening in the Public Hall. ine evening was spent in dancing, music for which was supplied by Mr E. McNaught. The presentation and speech of congratulation was made by Mr J. Pye. Mr Gordon Brown suitably replied for Miss Garthv/aite. Personal. Misses Ethet Gormack and Hazel Frew leave on Tuesday for Dunedin on holiday. , , ~. Miss W. Hannan was the guest of Mrs J. Hannan over the week-end. The local Foresters’ Lodge, Court Star of the Forest, held their annual ball last Wednesday evening. The Ambassadors Orchestra played the music, while Miss Hannan played an extra. Mr C. Frew was M.C. . At the recent Winter Show in Dunedin Mr A. Milne, manager of Wyndham Dairy Factory, and son of Mr and Mrs Robert Milne, of Woodlands, met with great success. His entries carried off the greater part of the prize-money and special awards. The entries from the local dairy factory also did very well, taking two “specials” as well as numerous “placings.” Mr A. Harper is the manager at' Woodlands. A Great Improvement. The danger of the notorious “dangerous dip” on the main Dunedin-Inver-cargill highway at Woodlands has been totally obviated by the work recently completed by Mr J. Dooley for the County Council. Tl}e “dip” which is perhaps better known as Small’s Gully, has been filled in and the crown taken off the rise which was just at the intersection of the main highway and the Mabel Bush Road. The intersection has been widened giving much better visibility and in all the work is a much

appreciated improvement, and is a credit to all concerned. Waihopai River. At the meeting at Myross Bush School on Thursday evening the attendance was small owing to the almost impossible weather conditions. the convenor was Mr A. S. McNaught. was considered inadvisable to gc' aht - ad with anything in the meantime, butthe County Council at its meeting on Friday carried a resolution asking the ratepayers along the river from the Winton Railway to Elies Road to sanction a loan to have flood protection work carried out on this stretch of the river. If the ratepayers do sanction this loan and the work is proceeded with, it will be a pity if the ratepayers further up do not take advantage oi the situation ta have the whole swamp of useless land cleaned up into valuable property. The heavy fogs which hang over this swamp in dismal weather make conditions all the more miserable around. In view of the expenditure on the Duck Creek scheme, it appears strange that this drainage scheme for the Waihopai has so long been neglected.
