MEETING OF COUNCIL I _ . ! COMMITTEE REPORTS The fortnightly meeting of the Gore Borough Council was held last evening when there were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) and Councillors A. H. W. Aitken, W. T. Trusler, G. C. Hamilton, J. A. S. Aitken, F. S. Graham, N. Robson, T. Sim, R. L. Reid, J. A. Baldey, W. K. Hamilton and J. A. Wright. The secretary •of the Gore High School Board of Governors (Mr F. Young) applied for a renewal of the grant of- £25 made towards the cost of conducting evening technical classes. The application was referred to the Finance Committee. Applications for permission to trap opossums in the Croydon Domain were received from A. J. Middlemiss (Gore) and W. Coats (Mataura). It was decided to observe a close season for opossums on the recommendation of the ranger. Works Committee. The following recommendations were made by the Works Committee and except as otherwise stated adopted:— Application for widening Crewe street: It was decided to recommend that the work of widening Crewe street road be carried out by approved unemployed relief workers, provided a subsidy is obtained, at 10/8 a day for six days a week. New kerbs, channels and concrete footpaths: It was decided to recommend that the sum of £6OO be placed on the estimates for this year for additional new work. If this is approved of by the council, the committee will submit a list of streets to be done for approval. Petition from T. Robins and others for kerb, channel and footpath on south side of Irving street: It was decided that this application be held over and given consideration along with other requests when the estimates are being prepared. Hockey grounds, Block A: It was decided to ask the Men’s Hockey Club to arrange for a deputation to meet the Works Committee at its next meeting in order to discuss the position. Children’s Playground: (a) Gardener’s report on trees: It was decided that this matter be left with his Worship the Mayor and gardener to have work required carried out. (b) Equipment: That the children’s slide be fixed up and any other work required to be done in connection with the equipment be attended to by the foreman of works, (c) Area dug up: That this matter be left with Councillor Hamilton to measure off and report as to making this additional hockey grounds, (d) Tree stumps: That this matter be left with Councillor Hamilton to ascertain approximate cost of having stumps taken out. Parking of cars, Mersey Street and Main Street: It was decided to recommend that the following be set aside as additional parking areas: —(a) North side of Mersey Street from Farmers Central Garage to within one chain of Fairfield Street, the entrance for horses to National Mortgage and Agency Company’s buildings being left clear, (b) East side of Main Street from water trough to footpath crossing from A. Morton’s to railway. At both areas cars are to be parked directly behind one another and not on an angle. Railway Crossing, Medway Street: After inspecting this crossing, it was decided to recommend that the Railway Department be requested to fix up the roadway on the eastern, side of the railway and keep it in order and that application be made to have roadway tar-sealed to within three feet of the rails. The roadway could be marked off with white lines for regulation of traffic. „ . - Iron fence, gardens, corner Fairfield and Irk Streets: This matter was given consideration by the Committee and it was decided to have the corner taken off as marked off by the gardener and that the balance of the ground be fenced off with sft galvanized iron and painted. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee submitted the following recommendations which were adopted: Plan of alterations at Fire Station: Mr Adam Speden submitted a plan of proposed alterations at the fire station, which was approved subject to finance being arranged. Captain Wallis was not present. The inspector of health approved of the plan subject to drainage portion being given further consideration.

Jubilee Celebrations: The committee discussed the details of proposed programme and it was decided to recommend that in addition to the names submitted to the council, that ratepayers be invited to the banquet and that admission be by ticket at a charge of 5/- a head and that the same be advertised to close on July 1 in order to enable arrangements being made with the caterer.

Equipment for children’s playground: It was decided to hold this matter over for consideration when valuations were completed and estimates were being prepared.
