GAMBLING SCHOOL

EFFORT AT DISPERSAL. FORESTALLED BY POLICE. The Rev. G. W. pittendrigh (Methodist), Pastor G. Haughan (Baptist) and Major Robinson (Salvation Army) set out recently to break up a big gambling school in a Brisbane suburb. They had arranged to start a religious service with the “books” and bettors as congregation. Shortly before the service was due to start two carloads of police dispersed the “school” and detectives stood by fdr the rest of the afternoon to prevent it from reassembling. The “school” is conducted every race day with from 150 to 200 patrons, and the clergy had decided to accept what they regarded as a challenge to the churches. To drown the shouting of odds they had brought along the Salvation Army band. The ministers were annoyed to have their plans upset, for they claimed that the police should have scattered the “school” many months ago instead oi waiting until others intervened.
