£4OO STOLEN.

CAREFUL THIEVES.

(Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, June 15.

Safe-blowers were at work in the' city early this morning. They entered' the premises of Hay’s, Ltd., a drapery! firm in Gloucester street, and stole al sum believed to be over £4OO. Alli the offices were ransacked in a search! for the keys to open the safe before! the burglars resorted to explosives.! Mattresses and a carpet were piled oven the safe to deaden the sound of the 1 explosion. The nightwatchman,, who pays periodical visits to the building, arrived on the scene within fifteens minutes of the occurrence. The thievesi apparently used some children’s socksi as mittens in order to guard against, leaving fingerprints. It is evident the amount of gelignite was carefully cal-culated-just sufficient to shatter the lock and the bolts inside. The thieves gained an entrance by a window at the rear after climbing from the roof of an adjacent building.
