DEER QUESTION.
To the Editor. Sir, —An individual signing himself “Anti-deer” has made a very wholesale charge against me, viz., that any statement from any source whatever is treated by me with disdainful contempt. This is a rash and careless statement and is quite untrue. A great deal that has been charged against the deer is mere assertion. The opinion I have expressed about deer refers to an area between Manapouri and Te Wae Wae Bay. It is that in this area no appreciable damage has been done to the sawmilling timber by deer. I stand by that statement. Regarding seventy years’ experience of bush and deer, just here the words of the poet occur to my mind. “If you can bear to hear the words you’ve uttered,” etc. “Anti-deer” seems to know me quite well and has thrown a lot of sneering personal abvv at me. I would, however, beg to remind him that personal abuse is no argument and is only resorted to by those whose case is weak. In conclusion will Mr “Anti-deer” inform me why, if my efforts are so harmless he is so het up about it. — I am, etc. P. HAMILTON.
