After breaking his right ankle while engaged on fencing work, several miles away from the Public Works Department camp at Wharepapa, near Woodhill, on Friday morning, a camp employee, Mr James Tooke, aged 55, had to crawl about two and a-half miles over rough country before he could attract the attention of other workers. The place where Mr Tooke was working was a long distance from the site where the main party of men was engaged and his shouts for assistance were not heard. When Mr Tooke’s plight was observed by the other men, a party of workers went to his assistance. Splints were applied to the ankle and the injured man was carried to the camp. Except for abrasions, Mr Tooke was little the worse for his arduous journey. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance later in the day.
