WOMEN’S DIVISION

FORTROSE BRANCH. The Fortrose branch of the W.D.F.U. celebrated their first birthday in the Social Hall, on Friday evening. Councillor T. Golden acted as chairman and he, in his opening remarks, congratulated the branch on attaining their first birthday. He stated how to-day the ladies were taking a more active part in public affairs and he thought this an excellent step, as he considered that they were more fitted to carry out certain public duties than men. He instanced the great help that the Hospital Board received from its lady members. In conclusion he wished the branch every success in their activities and hoped that the future would hold many more and perhaps larger gatherings than the one to-night. The company, which consisted of members and their friends, was entertained to a short concert programme, songs being rendered by Mrs J. Speden, Mrs D. Anderson, Mrs N, Johnson; pianoforte items by Miss Clarke and Mrs J. Chisholm, Mrs Monteath ably accompanying; humorous reading, J. S. Sinclair, also a short play, “A Rose in Bloom,” was given by members. The programme was interspersed with two games, Miss E. Shirley and Mr N. Johnson being the winners of the musical medley, and Mr and Mrs J. Chisholm of the guessing competition. During the preparation of supper-the company, ably led by the Rev. W. A. Carmichael, joined heartily in community singing. At this stage the chairman asked Mrs Carmichael to light the candle on the birthday cake, which was presented and cut by the president, Mrs T. Golden. ■ After supper the Rev. C. J. G. Samuda, gaVe thanks on behalf of the guests, apologizing for the absence of Mrs Samuda, and he asked the branch to bear in mind that they, to be successful, must have union—for “Unity is Strength.” He concluded his remarks by congratulating them on reaching their first birthday and reiterated his thanks for a pleasant and very enjoyable evening. Auld Lang Syne, in which all heartily joined, brought a happy evening to a close.
