TRAMS COLLIDE
VIOLENT IMPACT TWO MEN INJURED ‘ AUCKLAND ACCIDENT (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 14. A violent collision between outward bound tramcars in Symonds street at nine o'clock to-night resulted in two men being injured and both . cars damaged extensively. The injured tramway motorman and passenger were taken to Hospital. Neither was seriously hurt. The other occupants of the two cars escaped with a shaking. The driver of the second car, Robert Albert de Malmanche, aged 56, married, suffered concussion and head injuries, while George Davis, aged 31, of Grafton, a passenger in the leading car, had his left thigh severely bruised. Davis left hospital after being treated in the casualty department. The leading tram, bound for Onehunga, was just moving off up Symonds street from the East street stop when the collision occurred. The following tram crashed into the one ahead, the driver’s compartment being interlocked with the rear cab of the Onehunga car. De Malmanche was struck heavily by part of the broken cab, while Davis, who was standing on the rear platform of the car in front, also received a severe blow. Passengers in both trams were severely shaken, some being thrown from their seats by the force of the impact. Two women suffered so severely from shock that they collapsed. They were given attention in a shop nearby. The two tramcars were interlocked and stationary and could not be moved for about half an hour, during.which time a line of cars extending from East street to below Grafton Bridge was obliged to wait. The leading car had the back cab almost demolished, the controls being tom from their mountings and the woodwork and glass smashed. The driver’s cab on the second car was also damaged.
