TAPANUI NOTES

WELCOME HOME. (From Our Correspondent.) The “Dalvey” farm, of the estate of the late Mr J. D. Rodger, Pomahaka, has been sold by Stronach, Morris'and Co. to Mr J. Kane, Hawea Flat, who will take possession at the end of June. Mr and Mrs W. Hailer, Pomahaka, were welcomed home by a large number of friends last week. Dancing was carried on in the barn, to music provided by Messrs A. Allan, Bryson, and G. McKenzie. Songs were sung by Messrs Allan, Bryson, Cronin, and Smith. Welcome home speeches. were delivered by Messrs Stickle (Conical Hill), Allan (Pomahaka), Whyte (Pomahaka), Smith and Cronin (Gore). Mr Jas. Tait presented a small gift from local residents to Mr and Mrs Hailes, and wished fhem long life and prosperity. ■ Mr and Mrs James Dickison and family were farewelled at a social held in Conical Hiil school by a large gathering of friends and neighbours. Cards and dancing were the amusements of the evening, and after supper Mr G. Kerr asked Mr and Mrs Dickison to accept a beautiful chiming clock as a gift from their friends in the district where they had lived for many years, and were held in high esteem. All wished them success and happiness in their new home at Glenaray, Waikaia, Mr G. Howat. Tapanui also spoke of the guests of the evening in similar laudatory terms and Mr Dickison suitably replied thanking all for their handsome gift, and their very kind expressions of goodwill. Mr and Mrs James Reid, Waikoikoi, who recently returned from their honeymoon, suffered a serious loss in the destruction by fire of their house on Friday morning The house was a two-storied wooden building erected some fifty years ago. Awakened by the crackling of flames about two o’clock in the morning, Mr and Mrs Reid, and Miss Reid, had time to save only a few personal effects. The fire seemed to have started in the top storey, probably through a defective chimney, and the whole building was in a roaring flame ir. a very short time. There was no insurance on house and furniture.

At the meeting of the Moa Flat Young Farmers’ Club held at Mr G. M. Love’s residence, “The Grenuau” Messrs Stuart and Raymond McKenzie were appointed to represent the club at the meeting of delegates from the Young Farmers’ Clubs to be held in Dunedin in June. The Heriot Debating Club wrote asking club members to take part in a debate on a subject to be selected later. It was agreed to thank, the Heriot Debating Club for their invitation and to accept it After supper the chairman, Mr H. Dtiff, made a presentation from the Young Farmers’ Club, to Mr and Mrs Love, of a bedroom rug and a pair of slippers. Mr Duff referred to the kindness an J hospitality shown to the members of the club by Mr and Mrs Love, who had placed their rooms at the disposal of the club for their meetings. Mr Love said that it had been a pleasure to Mrs Love and to himself to have the Young Farmers meet in their house. He hoped the members would continue to interest themselves in agriculture. They were very fortunate to have such clubs which were of great educational value He thanked them for their gifts which

were quite unexpected. Rugby Football. The West Otago Sub-Union met at Kelso, Mr E. Arnold being in the chair. It was decided that if necessary the Heriot—Kelso match abandoned through rain, should be 'played again. Tile date for the South Otago v. West Otago match to be played at Tapanui, is to be arranged by the president and secretary. >. The retiring president, Mr A. Ottrey, was thanked for his interest in subunion matters during the year. The final matches of the first round were played on Saturday under good weather conditions. At Kelso, Tapanui played Kelso, In the first half no score was registered by either side, but on resuming play Mockford and A. Edgar score", the kick failing in both cases. Hard play on both sides resulted in no further . ore, the game ending Tapanui 6, Kelso nil. Mr Johnston was referee. Heriot v. Waikoikoi was played on the ’Koi grounds and was a very hard and fast game.. The forwards were evenly match id, but the ’Koi backs were superior to Heriot. Points were first gained by ’Koi, W. Reid kicking a penalty goal. Heriot equalized soon afterwards. In the second half, after some good passes by ’Koi oacks, G. McCall scored 1 under the posts and W. Reid converted. ’Koi again broke away and a passing rush ended in Colin McKenzie securing, and after a brilliant run from mid-field, scoring r try. The kick failed.
