It goes without saying that the livestock which the pastures carry must be capable of earning their keep. To feed with the choicest, well-balanced ration a cow yielding annually no more than 1601 b of butterfat, a sow with an average weaned litter of five piglets, or a hen that lays 100 eggs only in the year, does violence to the term “husbandry,” and is as imprudent as putting a new and highly efficient engine in an unseaworthy ship.
