WOODLANDS NOTES
THE WEATHER. So far this month 2.65 inches of rain have been recorded at Woodlands. The biggest recording was for the 24 hours ending 8 p.m., Wednesday, when 86 points were recorded. Sunday’s snow made 57 points. On Sunday, 9th, the snow was 3 inches deep, while on Wednesday it was 5 inches. Farming Notes. The present cold spell will mean a quicker ending for the milk supply on the dairy farmers. The prices ruling for dairy produce and the high value of good winter feed has induced many to “finish off” the herds earlier than usual. Good crops of winter feed are, by the way, rare. This season has witnessed an unusual movement in the amount of stock changing hands. The value of all classes of sheep has remained steady right throughout the season of the big sales. The cattle market has been fluctuating frequently. Prices for fat cattle have not been remunerative to the producer or fattener, and the ‘continuance of low prices for dairy produce will mean a reduction in herds and a consequent surplus of killable cattle. The only bright features of the cattle market are the possibility of further development in the near, future of the chilled beef trade and further exports of “baby” beef. The “baby” beef includes well grown vealers and cattle up to two years. A considerable quantity of this class is being slaughtered at present for export. The larger crop of potatoes are now being sent forward. They represent lighter yields than usual with a fair proportion of second class quality due to various potato diseases. The prospects for better prices before next season’s supply are bright. Personal. , Mr and Mrs M. D. McNally, of Morton Mains, returned from Oamaru on Tuesday, where they have been spending a holiday.
