ST. SAVIOUR’S ANGLICAN CHURCH

(From Our Correspondent.)

The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Saviour’s Anglican Church was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall .on Wednesday evening, Mr J. K. Valentine presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet was presented by the secretary and was as follows: “Your committee have to report as follows.—Firstly on the unsatisfactory position in which the district is placed by reason of the nonappointment of a vicar; we have now for over twelve months been dependent on the services of our Lay Readers and the assistance of the clergy of the neighbouring parishes. We wish to record deepest appreciation of these services so willingly given. In spite of the difficulty just mentioned attendances at the church have been well maintained and we hope this interest in church affinrs will continue. The Sunday School under the able direction of Mrs Wheeler and her ass’ 3 *- ants continues to thrive and the thanks of all are due to these willing helpers. Luring the year a new fence had been erected around the church and this adds greatly to the church’s appearance. For their able efforts to make this possible we are indebted to the Ladies’ Guild, not only for monetary assistance but also for its undertaking the task of collecting funds. As was only to be expected, offerings for the year show a decrease but to set oft this our payments for assessments were much lighter and this enabled us to show a small increase in our credit balance. In conclusion we wish to thank our organist, our collectors and all others who have assisted us in this difficult period. We have also to thank Dr Woodhouse for her gift of altar curtains which have helped so much to beautify our church. Your committee trusts that before long the present unsatisfactory position in this district will be rectified.” . In moving the adoption of the documents the chairman congratulated the members on the state of the affairs under existing circumstances, pie balance-sheet was one which they would gladly approve of he thought. Unfortunately they had not advanced very far in respect of the appointment of a vicar but the central vestry had endeavoure I to secure one but had been given no encouragement. The committee had had propositions put to it relative to working with the Gore parish or probably linking up with Fortrose. The church locally did not wish to lose any young adherents and there were numerous scholars at the sabbath school under the superintendency of Mrs Wheeler for whom it was imperative that something be done. He concluded by stating that if nothing were finalized he did not know where the church would go. In seconding the motion Mr T. G. Boyd said their position was largely due to the fact that the assessments were much lighter than formerly. Like the chairman he trusted that something definite would be done with regard to the appointment of a vicar, but jrom information available the probabilities were very much against any appointment at the present time. Mrs C. D. Taylor expressed the view that if the congregation could not get a vicar appointed to them the assessments should not be paid. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Committee, Messrs J. K. Valentine, R. Haywood, E. W. Benfell, J. Henry, TG. Boyd, J. B. Taylor, R. Sleeman with power to add; secretary, Mr V. H. Ball; treasurer, Mr T. G. Boyd. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the following for special services given during the year, Revs C. Webb and H. Samuda, Mr and Mrs T. G. Boyd, Miss Sleeman; the latter having been responsible for placing flowers in. the church sabbath by sabbath. At the conclusion of the business meeting a social hour was held. Miniature Rifle Club. The final shot in a self-handicap competition was fired at the weekly meeting of the Mataura Miniature Rifle Club held on Wednesday evening in the Horticultural Hall. As there were several back shoots yet to be fired the winner will not be known until next week. It is expected that at Monday’s meeting a team from the Wyndham club will be present to fire a first shoot for the cup presented by the United Trading Co. Ltd. This is an annual competition and the local club are at present the holders having beaten the visitors last year by a narrow margin. It is also proposed to take the Mataura Club’s championship competition the same evening so that a good night’s sport seems assured. Following are the scores:—
